Specific Need
The Flint Hills Breadbasket provides food support to anyone experiencing food insecurity in Riley County and a section of Pottawatomie County. The official Covid 19 emergency declaration was ended in March 2022, resulting in the ending of enhanced SNAP (food stamp) assistance to many people. There is a consistent need for healthy food choices and basic hygiene items. Providing for these most basic needs provides stability for many households, allowing them to pay other basic bills and to take one worry off of their plate. The Breadbasket needs support to provide sustainable access to fresh foods, basic staples for cooking like flour, sugar, vegetable oil, and spices, and high need items like toilet paper, laundry detergent, and toothpaste.
Mission
Our mission is to provide reliable access to healthy food, build connections with community partners, and empower neighbors to meet their basic needs. When we reach our goal, there will be no one in need among us.
Profile
The Breadbasket dedicates a large portion of our Grow Green dollars to the purchase of eggs and milk. We seen a significant increase in the number of households we serve each day. We currently serve between 40 and 65 households during each market of 2.5 hours. With 6 market sessions each week, we frequently serve more than 350 households. With new guests registering on a regular basis, we know that the need is present and growing. It is our goal to meet the need with care and dignity for all.
